Selasih & Padi

When I’m not out with friends or love, most of my time during the holidays will be spent with Mak. I especially enjoy such quality time, because she would share with me stories of days gone by. My personal favourite would have to be either my Nenek’s childhood in Madura or, about my Atok’s personal encounter with the Japanese during WWII.

Her story today was a little more light-hearted, but no less interesting. LOVE

How would you ask someone out? Or better still, how would you ask a special someone to be, well exclusively yours? I’m sure in primary school, we’ve all had our fair share of writing loveletters, asking the other party to tick yes or no, under the question “Will you be my steady?” Haha, if you thought that was ancient, you should hear my mum’s version.
My mak used to work with HDB as a parking attendant. Because of her occupation, she had the opportunity to socialize with cleaners and the likes. So one fine day, a friend of hers (who was rumoured to have a crush on one of the male cleaners) asked her to pass a present to one of the male cleaners.

“Cakap ni daripada aku”, she requested.

So mak didn’t think much of it, she just came up to the guy and passed the parcel. He opened it immediately in front of my Mak only to find two things inside. Selasih & padi.

(Ah, this part all of you (like myself) would definitely be wondering about the significance of the selasih & padi right?)

The guy (who received the present) was as puzzled himself. My mak pondered for a while then said.

“Ouh ni style lama ni. Selasih dan padi. Macam kasih dalam hati!”

Kental? nyeahahaa. But then again, is there ever a “cool” way of asking someone to be your “steady”?

Love, makes people do the kentalest of things. Period.

Aidiladha 2008

(See lah this lil haji-olok-olok. Asyik menyekik aje dari tadi…)

As usual, hari rayas will be spent at home since all my grandmothers & grandfathers have passed away and my dad is the eldest sibling. Besides, it’s not very convenient to carry my dad around and not very nice to leave him at home alone either.

I find my rayas this year very simple yet, somehow they manage to make me feel warm & fuzzy inside. I’m not too sure why but, the fact that everyone (who matters) makes effort to come over dan make the best of things might be one of the major contributing factors.

Coincidentally, almost everyone decided to wear shades of yellow & orange this year, even though no one took the initiative to colour-coordinate. :)

A raya entry would be incomplete without a family portrait right? so here it is… :)

Short roadtrip to Malacca

It started off with Naz asking me whether i’ll be free the next day. Expecting like a lepak session at our favourite coffeeshop, I said “Free.” Malacca was totally not on my mental list of lepak places. But I am soooo glad I could make it. Thanks sitti, for driving us all the way there.

Ate at Nandos. ANd had chendol. and bought very makcik stuff like krepek & dodol; because mummy dearest asked me to. The only Malacca-ish souvenior I got was a whisel, with my name on it. and I’m amazed how the boys can make whisel-blowing look so obscene. eeeeeeewww
